Clarence Gagnon Art Cards | 10 Winter Paintings & I Spy Details

Explore the luminous winter landscapes of Canadian painter Clarence Gagnon with ten carefully selected art cards. His snowy Quebec villages, dramatic contrasts and rich winter colours help children discover that winter scenes can contain far more than white.

WHAT'S INCLUDED

• 10 artwork cards depicting paintings by Clarence Gagnon.

• 10 'I Spy' magnified image-detail circles.

• A Meet the Artist page introducing Gagnon's work in the Laurentians and Charlevoix region of Quebec.

• A Let's Talk About Art discussion-prompt page.

HOW TO USE

Begin with a few paintings and look closely at buildings, trees, snow, people and sky. Invite children to match each detail circle to the corresponding full image. Compare the use of blue, red, yellow, white, light and shadow across different winter scenes. Use the discussion prompts to ask how the landscape feels and which artistic choices make a scene look cold, quiet or inviting. Add a second printed set if you would like identical-picture matching.

SKILLS & LEARNING

Close observation, visual discrimination, appreciation of art history, artistic vocabulary, matching, memory, and communicating observations and feelings.

PRINTING & PREPARATION

Print on bright white cardstock and cut along the grey dotted lines. Use a few works at first; add more cards as children develop familiarity. For duplicate-art matching, print a second copy of the art cards.
