Monet's Étretat Art Cards | Paintings & Photo Matching
Walk along the dramatic cliffs of Étretat in Normandy through twelve paintings by Claude Monet. This distinctive artist study connects Impressionist paintings to photographs of the real places Monet depicted, helping children discover how changes in weather, light and viewpoint can transform the same landscape.
WHAT'S INCLUDED
• 12 art cards featuring Monet's Étretat paintings.
• 12 magnified artwork-detail cards.
• 12 real photograph cards showing locations depicted in the paintings.
• 12 matching control cards to check photo-to-art matches.
• One colouring page.
• An information sheet about Monet's visit to Étretat in 1883 and the landscapes that inspired him.
HOW TO USE
Explore a few paintings together, discussing cliffs, waves, boats, shadows and changing light. Match each enlarged detail to the original painting. In a second activity, match each historical artwork to a photograph of the corresponding location, then check the pairing using the control cards. Compare how a place looks in a photograph versus a painting; the included colouring page offers an additional creative extension. For ordinary artwork-to-artwork matching, print two copies of the art cards.
SKILLS & LEARNING
Art history, geographical awareness, observation of light and weather, matching, visual analysis, similarity and difference, and close-looking conversation.
PRINTING & PREPARATION
Print art and photograph cards on bright white cardstock of at least about 65 lb. Cut along grey dotted lines; the colouring page can be printed on ordinary paper. Optional colour tiles and second-copy art cards can extend the activities.
Digital PDF download; no physical cards are shipped.
