Montessori Green Series Spelling Set | 300 Words, 3 Stages
Turn confident Green Series reading into purposeful spelling and handwriting with this extensive Montessori Green Series Spelling Set. Created as an extension to the companion Reading Set, this resource offers 300 picture-supported words organized by long-vowel, digraph and diphthong spelling patterns. Children advance through three deliberate stages, moving from guided tracing to independently writing complete words.
WHAT'S INCLUDED
• 300 different Green Series words arranged by target spelling pattern.
• Three progressively challenging spelling activities: trace the featured letter pattern, write the missing letters, and spell the complete word from a picture prompt.
• Illustrated exercises and writing guide lines that support the transition from recognition to independent encoding.
• A recommended Green Series teaching-sequence poster and presentation instructions.
• A 122-page printable PDF resource covering long vowels, consonant digraphs, r-controlled and other selected vowel patterns.
HOW THE THREE STAGES WORK
• Stage 1 — Trace and read: trace the dotted target letters within each word, pronouncing the sounds and reading the complete word. Most pattern groups offer repeated practice across ten different examples.
• Stage 2 — Supply the missing pattern: use the illustration and the remaining letters to determine which vowel combination or digraph completes the word, then write the missing letters.
• Stage 3 — Independent spelling: study each picture, say the word, segment its sounds and write the entire word on the guide lines without a printed word model.
HOW TO USE
• Introduce a spelling group only after the child has encountered and can read that sound pattern in the Green Series Reading Set. The exercises are designed to consolidate familiar material, not to replace an initial phonics presentation.
• Begin with a single pattern, review the image vocabulary together, and then progress through the three stages as the child becomes ready.
• Invite children to compare spelling choices, read back their completed words and notice which letter combinations make familiar sounds.
• Use individual sheets for Montessori follow-up work, literacy centres, homeschool practice or focused small-group lessons.
• Review the spelling-sequence poster when planning new lessons, especially where one word may use patterns taught in another group.
SKILLS SUPPORTED
• Encoding words containing long vowels, consonant digraphs and selected complex vowel patterns.
• Phonemic segmentation, sound-to-symbol correspondence and spelling-pattern recognition.
• Pencil control, handwriting, visual recall and growing independence.
• Transfer from word recognition and reading to written expression.
PRINTING & PREPARATION
This is a digital printable PDF. Print the pages you need on paper of your choice. For reusable practice, place pages inside sheet protectors and use dry-erase markers; for a take-home activity, children can write directly on the pages with pencil.
